Technology is the engine providing digital experiences for National Geographic Society. Fromour staff to our constituents, Technology provides the power to amplify National Geographic'simpact through value-based product delivery, transformational data services, and world-classsupport and infrastructure services. These services include employee training and technicalsupport, audio/visual production, device management, enterprise architecture, networkmanagement, on-premise and cloud computing, information security, identity management, datamanagement and integration, product management, user experience design, softwaredevelopment, systems engineering, and systems administration. Technology is comprised offive teams: Business Products, Constituent Products, Data Products, Infrastructure & Security,and Technology Support Services.The GIS Platform is a new and growing Technology section that fosters the development ofinfrastructure that supports GIS services across the Society.How You'll Contribute:The GIS Platform Engineer supports the GIS Platform Director to implement the design,operation, and maintenance of the National Geographic Society's GIS Platform, both on-premiseand in the cloud. The GIS Platform Engineer will collaborate with the GIS Platform Director inplanning and executing GIS Platform upgrades as well as activities oriented to tracking andreporting usage of cloud resources by business unit or program that utilizes GIS services. TheGIS Platform Engineer reports to the GIS Platform Director within the Technology team.The GIS Platform Engineer works closely with the Geographic Services team, and the rest of theTechnology team to implement technology solutions, ensuring a high level of useradoption/satisfaction through effective use of IT best practices followed by the Society.The GIS Platform Engineer will support the GIS Platform Director in defining KPIs and track othermetrics to evaluate the health and performance of the GIS infrastructure, identify defects,efficiencies, enhancements, and ensure a cycle of continuous improvement.Your ImpactSupport (40%)--- Support the on-going development and implementation of the GIS Platform includingarchitecture, roadmap, project plans, under the direction of the GIS Platform Director.--- Participate in implementing GIS governance policies with other members of theTechnology and Geographic Services teams across all GIS Platform products.--- Contribute to executing plans to incorporate policies and procedures into dailyoperations and systems design.--- Monitor software with System Monitoring tools to address performance issues orhardware over-utilization, track usage trends, and identify errors.--- Work with other Technology teams to automate the installation and configuration of theGIS Platform.--- Work with other Technology teams to evaluate and improve Platform security andperformance including, but not limited to, authentication, load balancer configurationsand firewall settings.--- Support the development and maintenance of operational documentation includingstandard operating procedures.--- Support great working relationships between Technology, Geographic Services, andother sections that consume NGS GIS technologies.--- Work with various teams within Technology to ensure that GIS Platform requests fromNGS staff and the Disney/NGP Map Teams are being handled promptly and smoothly.--- Participate in activities oriented to get additional support or consulting services whennecessary.Engineer (30%)--- Administer virtual servers and other cloud infrastructure on Linux (for ArcGIS for Serverimplementations, Portal for ArcGIS and RDBMS) and Windows (for Desktop Users andalso Server/Portal/RDBMS if so configured).--- Collaborate on configuring and administering ArcGIS Enterprise (formerly known asArcGIS for Server and Portal for ArcGIS software) and ArcGIS Online.--- Recommend and track KPIs and metrics that can be used to evaluate the Platform'shealth and performance, identify defects, efficiencies, enhancements, and ensure a cycleof continuous improvement.--- Ensure all engineering implementations are sufficiently documented and all engineeringdocumentation is up-to-date.--- Participate in the planning, development, testing, and deployment of geospatial Platformprojects aimed at enhancing Platform functionality.Development (30%)--- Support a data-driven, DevOps culture within Technology Infrastructure.--- Contribute to developing, and implementing a uniform GIS information architecture.--- Implement COTS tools to audit GIS environments (servers, files, services) for securityissues, performance issues or misconfigurations.--- Contribute when needed to develop and implement programmatic workflows to supportthe functions of the GIS platform.--- Help implement and configure tools to monitor operational trends and productdevelopments to anticipate change, to minimize risk, and to identify opportunities forgrowth.What You'll BringEducational BackgroundAn associate or bachelor's degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or a related field ispreferred. Equivalent experience is acceptable.Minimum Years and Type of Experience5 years of experience in the information technology field, with at least 3 years of hands-onexperience designing, implementing, and maintaining GIS Platforms that consist of both ArcGISEnterprise (formerly known as ArcGIS for Server and Portal for ArcGIS software) and ArcGISOnline. Knowledge and/or experience in agile concepts and methodologies is desired.Knowledge and Skills Required:--- Strong command of GIS concepts and practice, and strong experience in Esri ArcGISEnterprise, core products and extensions, and ArcGIS Online.--- Technology infrastructure both on-premise and in the cloud, including network systemsand management, computing and storage, virtualization, and information security.--- Designing, implementing, and operating cloud-based solutions that leverage aninfrastructure-as-a-service provider such as Amazon Web Services, Google CloudPlatform or Microsoft Azure.--- Understanding of HTTP and REST combined with experience securing and monitoringweb services.--- Designing and visualizing system architectures from different points of view usingdifferent UML 2 diagrams.--- IT service management concepts and processes as well as knowledge of DevOpspractices.--- Familiarity with Agile methodologies for software and products development to be ableto collaborate effectively in multiple projects to successful conclusion.--- Active listening skills combined with strong written and verbal communication skills.--- Experience working in teams of different technology and professional backgrounds. Beable to align mission, business goals with everyday tasks.--- Writing scripts and modules using Python in a production environment, including use ofArcGIS Python API libraries and Jupyter Notebooks.Desired skills:--- Provisioning cloud infrastructure using Terraform, Chef, or Puppet.
