Summary Description:
Responsible for the overall management of the Nursing Department
and coordinates with other disciplines to provide quality care to
all patients/residents. The job description for the Registered
Nurse is the basis of this job description and must be
followed.
- Supports practices, philosophy, nursing objectives and
standards of the Nursing Department and participates in the
revision of the aforementioned items as necessary to ensure quality
care to all patients/residents.
- Ensures Implementation of a patient/resident care planning
process in compliance with patient/resident needs, facility
policies and procedures and regulatory
- Ensures the Nursing Department is in compliance with all
federal, state and local
- Ensures a process of internal review of nursing practices and
develops and implements plans of action to correct any
problems/concerns.
- Ensures all facets of the nursing budget are within the
established parameters.
- Ensures a process of quality assessment and Reviews and
implements external support recommendations as they pertain to the
Nursing Department
- Ensures the process of an in-service/staff development program
that contributes to meeting nursing objectives and policies and
procedures to comply with state and federal regulations. Includes
the philosophy, objectives and standards of the nursing department
in the orientation and education of nursing service personnel.
- Ensures that the nursing department is adequately staffed to
provide quality care to patients/residents.
- Establishes and facilitates effective employer/employee
- Recruits and selects nursing service personnel based on
facility
- Staffs the nursing department at a level congruent with
patient/resident needs, state and federal requirements, budgeted
positions and employee requests.
- Schedules nursing manpower to support individual and group
activities for patients/residents out of the facility.
- Establishes an evaluation of performance for all levels of
nursing service personnel.
- Participates in "on-call" schedule for nursing supervisory
personnel to ensure 24/7 nursing support for staff nurses Provides
clinical expertise to facilitate and support the nursing process in
patient/resident
- Makes nursing rounds in a manner that identifies specific
patient/resident problems and monitors plans of action implemented
by
- Assesses technical skills of nursing personnel by observation
of various nursing procedures.
- Assesses nursing judgments made in specific situations to
determine staff competence and to identify staff knowledge and
performance
- Identifies clinical problem areas and coordinates the
development of plans of
- Acts as a clinical expert in facilitating the patient/resident
care planning process.
- Ensures a safe and sanitary environment for patients/residents,
employees and visitors.
- Ensures a process to adequately investigate all nursing
department employee accidents in accordance with procedures
outlined in the facility's safety standards.
- Ensures a process to monitor and review patient/resident
incidents to identify possible legal issues and to identify
patterns that might require preventive
- Implements the infection control standards of practice as
outlined in the company
- Ensures the education of all nursing staff regarding current
infection control
- Performs other duties as assigned by the

Standards:
Education: RN, Bachelor of Science degree, in nursing
preferred.
Experience: Three to five years of nursing experience. One to five
years of long term care experience. Prior management
experience.
License/Other: Must possess current nursing license in state(s) in
which practicing. Must have a reliable source of transportation and
be able to travel via air and car to attend training programs.
Working Conditions:
Works in office areas as well as throughout the facility. Must be
able to move about intermittently during working hours including
standing, lifting, bending, stooping, twisting, pushing, and
pulling. Must be able to read, write and speak the English
language. Must be able to transfer residents and assist in
emergency evacuations. Interacts with residents, family members,
staff, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc., under all
conditions/circumstances. Must be able to relate and work with the
disabled, ill, elderly, emotionally upset and at times, hostile
people within the facility. May be involved in community/civic
health matters/ projects.
May be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc.,
including exposure to the AIDS and hepatitis B viruses. Must be
able to effectively communicate with the management staff, medical
staff, nursing staff, and other unit supervisors. Maintains a
liaison with residents, their families, support staff, etc. to
assure that the residents' needs are continually met.
