DALLAS DAY SURGERY OF TEXAS LTD NORTHJOB DESCRIPTIONDepartment: PACU (Post Anesthesia Care Unit)Job Title: Clinical Nurse R.N.General SummaryRenders professional nursing care in support of nursing care and medical staff treatment plans to patients in the PACU. A registered, professional nurse who delivers safe and competent care to the patient emerging from general, regional, local anesthesia or IV sedation. Utilize the nursing process of advanced assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation skills comprehensive in patient care. Instructs patients and significant others in care provided, disease and/or illness, expected outcomes and home care. Maintains records and reports and communicates patient information to other health care team members to ensure continuity of care. Maintains high standards of nursing practice. Duties may vary by assigned area or shift but the following are characteristic of this classification.Principal Duties and Responsibilities1. Renders advanced professional nursing care in the perioperative setting including the administration of medications, starting IV's, electrocardiography, venipuncture, catheterization, defibrillation, and other complex and routine treatments to include review of patients' charts as prescribed by physician or as required by patient's condition. Evaluates patient's response to planned comprehensive care recognizing and interpreting physiological and psychological changes, consulting with other health care professionals and revising such plans as appropriate. Provides patient with explanation and verbal reassurance consistently.2. Interprets and analyzes data from all health team members and integrates it into written assessment and formulates a nursing diagnosis based on available assessment data and nursing principles. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Is able to interpret data about the patients' status, in order to identify each patient's age-specific needs and provide the care needed by the patient group.3. Transports patient to The Cloister Hotel and parking lot (for discharge)4. Formulates individualized patient care plans by prescribing nursing interventions for patient problems establishing realistic goals for patient during postoperative experience. Organizes and manages nursing activities reflecting due consideration for patients' needs and the needs of the facility and staff. Flexibility is maintained.5. Provides comprehensive post-operative nursing care for assigned patients by maintaining a current care plan and adjusting it to patients' changing needs, performing nursing care including specialized treatments, administering prescribed medications, delegating duties to appropriate person, and coordinating patient care with other depts..6. Meets learning needs of patients and significant others by providing accurate information regarding care during hospitalization including expected outcomes, home care instruction and referrals to appropriate health agencies and resources. Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Practices good guest relations.7. Responsible for establishing and maintaining learning environment by working effectively with health team members through constant communication, assisting with care and documentation and initialing and conduction patient care conferences with staff.8. Supports colleagues by offering and accepting assistance, sharing information and services and utilizing resources effectively. Maintains a good working relationship and effective communication both the department and with other departments for the benefit of the patient.9. Participates and acts as a resource in life-threatening situations which includes charge responsibilities in such situations and teaching other staff their responsibilities in emergency situations.10. Communicates patient care plan to health team members on a continuous basis which includes completing and updating assignment sheets, giving report, providing explanation of plan of care to be given, acting as resource person, and completing necessary documentation on various nursing forms.11. Maintains records and charts, and reports to proper person pertinent information regarding patient's condition, medication given, treatment administered, and so forth.12. Maintains PACU area in clean and orderly manner ensuring proper supplies and equipment are on hand for next patient.13. Reviews, evaluates and makes recommendations regarding unit policies and procedures related to patient care to ensure comprehensive patient care.14. Participates in other professional activities such as contributing to learning experience of nursing student, participating in in-services and continuing education program and assists in research project to ensure continued growth within profession.15. Serves as a role model, preceptor, or mentor. Utilized initiative strives to maintain steady level of productivity, a self-starter, compatible and supportive, a team player.16. Formulates a teaching plan, based on identified patient learning needs, and effectiveness of learning family is included in teaching as appropriate, from pre-op to discharge.17. Identifies physical symptoms and changes and takes appropriate action in a timely manner.18. Knowledge of cardiac monitoring and can identify dysrhythmias covered with ACLS.19. Communicates appropriately and clearly to surgery staff, cloister staff, co-workers and physicians.20. Consults other departments, as needed and as appropriate, to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient's needs.21. Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians in the PACU22. Demonstrates and ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.23. Meets current documentation standards and policies and completes within the shift.24. Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patients and family.25. Maintains an environment that provides the patient and family with feelings of safety and security.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:1. Must be a graduate of an approved program of professional nursing.2. Must possess a current permit or license as a registered nurse as required by the state of Texas3. Normally requires one to two years on the job experience in order to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of unit policies and procedures and advanced assessment and nursing care skills.4. Requires substantial interpersonal skills in order to instruct and comfort patients, initiate and conduct patient conferences and to work cooperatively with other health care team members.5. Requires a relatively high level of analytical ability in exercising professional judgment to prepare nursing care plans, implement effective nursing are and develop solutions to difficult problems concerning patient's mental or physical wellbeing.6. Conducts self in a manner that reflects the standards of the nursing service and thee nursing profession.7. Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.8. Keeps required ACLS and BLS current and PALS for PACU staff.9. Adheres to address code, appearance is neat and clean.10. Completes at least one annual educational session and provides one staff in service per year.11. Maintains regulatory requirements, nursing and facility policies procedures and standards12. Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time.13. Wears identification while on duty14. Completes in services and returns in a timely fashion. Keeps up to date with equipment orientation/training and documents in the Safety/Equipment manual kept in the Facility.15. Attends annual review and department in services as scheduled16. Attends at least 5 staff meetings annually. Reads and returns all monthly staff meeting minutes in a timely manner17. Maintains patient confidentiality at all times18. Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner19. Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices20.
