Cyro-Electron Microscopy Facility Summary The Biophysics Department is seeking a talented and motivated Research Scientist with experience in cryo-Focused Ion Beam (Cryo-FIB) technologies and cryo-electron tomography to join our growing team at the Cryo-Electron Microscopy Facility (). The CEMF contains two Aquilos II cryo-FIB mills (ThermoFisher Scientific) with integrated fluorescence light microscopes and a stand-alone Stellaris 5 (Leica) confocal fluorescence microscope in environmentally controlled facilities, Leica ICE High Pressure Freezer, wet-lab space for cell culture and sample preparation, and significant computational infrastructure for operational support. These facilities work in conjunction with our two Titan Krios, Talos Arctica and Glacios electron microscopes, all equipped with direct electron detectors. The CEMF is used by scientists across the biophysical and biological spectra to solve problems spanning signaling transduction, cell biology, neuroscience, and immunology. Department Expectations -Milling/processing samples as a core service to achieve the highest possible quality lamella for subsequent cryo-EM imaging. -Consulting with structural biologists along with the CEMF director regarding FIB projects undertaken at the core. -Interfacing and collaborating with the UT Southwestern Structural Biology Lab (SBL) which offers preliminary screening, data collection, and reconstruction of cryoEM/ET samples. -Implementing innovative FIB milling processes/data collection strategies that will benefit our user community. -Maintaining accurate logs for microscope performance/usage and managing the usage schedule for the instruments via iLab. -Interface with in-house cryoEM experts, IT specialists, and field service engineers to manage and ensure optimal performance of an Aquilos II system. Experience and Education -Ph.D. degree with major coursework in field of assignment and five (5) years research experience in field of assignment, including at least two (2) years at level of Senior Research Associate or equivalent. OR -Master's degree with major coursework in field of assignment and seven (7) years research experience in field of assignment, including at least three (3) years at level of Senior Research Associate or equivalent. OR -Bachelor's degree with major coursework in field of assignment and nine (9) years research experience in field of assignment, including at least four (4) years at level of Senior Research Associate or equivalent. Preferred Experience -Significant cryo-FIB experience from Academia or Industry. -One year experience working in a cryoEM core facility/Cryo-FIB. -Excellent communication skills to interface with internal and external customers as well as vendors regarding the equipment and operation of the facility. Job Duties -Plans, organizes, coordinates, directs, and personally participates in assigned scientific or medical research project. -Selects or assists in selection of key research personnel. -Determines specific goals or objectives to be attained and assigns and reviews work of subordinates. -Plans experimental protocols. -Reviews and analyzes resulting research data. -Revises techniques or approaches to work problems as indicated necessary by research data. -Compiles, writes, and submits research results to supervisor. -Prepares or assists in preparation of research papers, reports, and abstracts for publication as one of co-authors. Designs, develops, or adapts equipment used in experiments or research to obtain desired results. -Plans and supervises training of technicians and other laboratory personnel with respect to proper laboratory techniques, use of laboratory equipment, and safety procedures. -May confer with industrial, governmental, or other groups concerning progress or results of research project. -Performs other duties as assigned.
