Job Description:
Description JOB SUMMARY The LSS and Water Quality Technician
supports the operation, maintenance, and monitoring of life support
systems and aquatic infrastructure across the Zoo. This position
performs water quality testing, preventative maintenance, and
equipment repairs to ensure reliable operation of animal habitats
and public water features. The technician works closely with Animal
Care, Veterinary, and Facilities teams to maintain
species-appropriate environmental conditions and ensure compliance
with AZA, USDA, and other regulatory standards. SPECIFIC DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES • Perform routine water quality testing including
pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, chlorine, and other required
parameters. • Inspect, monitor, and operate life support systems
including pumps, filters, UV sterilizers, ozone generators,
chemical dosing systems, and associated equipment. • Perform
preventative maintenance including pump inspections, filter
backwashing and servicing, valve maintenance, and calibration of
monitoring instruments. • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and
water chemistry issues affecting aquatic systems. • Assist with
pump rebuilds, plumbing repairs, and replacement of system
components. • Respond to system alarms and assist with emergency
repairs to ensure continuous life support capability. • Maintain
accurate records of water chemistry testing, equipment maintenance,
and system operations. • Assist with installation, commissioning,
and upgrades of life support and aquatic systems. • Maintain
chemical storage areas and ensure proper handling and documentation
of treatment chemicals and SDS materials. • Coordinate with Animal
Care and Veterinary teams to maintain species-appropriate
environmental conditions. • Support regulatory compliance with AZA,
USDA, EPA, and other applicable standards. • Assist in maintaining
spare parts inventory and critical system supplies. • Maintain safe
work practices around chemicals, mechanical equipment, and aquatic
environments. • Participate in after-hours response or weekend
coverage as required to support life support system operations. •
Perform other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS • High School
diploma or GED required. Associate’s degree or technical training
in environmental science, water technology, mechanical systems, or
related field preferred. • Minimum 2 years of experience in aquatic
systems maintenance, water treatment, life support systems, pools,
fountains, or similar mechanical water infrastructure. • Experience
working in a zoo, aquarium, water park, municipal water system, or
similar facility preferred. • AALSO LSS operator level 1 and Water
Quality Technician level 1 certifications preferred. • NSPF
Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification or ability to obtain
within 6 months of employment. • Valid Texas driver’s license
required. • Working knowledge of water chemistry principles and
aquatic system maintenance. • Mechanical aptitude and experience
with pumps, filters, plumbing systems, and related equipment. •
Ability to safely work around water, chemicals, and mechanical
equipment. • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying
weather conditions, including confined spaces and elevated areas. •
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks including
bending, kneeling, reaching, and climbing ladders. • Successful
candidates must pass pre-employment drug screening, background
check, and TB test.
